Hello Fellow Driver!
First let me say thank you for checking out the website. The whole thing started as an idea a long time ago while sitting in traffic on 278. I wished there was a way to know what the traffic would be like before I started driving, like going to a website and actually seeing live traffic. I also knew of many people who would probably like to use the same service.
The idea was to use 2-3 cheap IP based cameras that would send pictures to a central server every few minutes. If the location didn't have internet access (DSL) I was considering using a wireless Wi-Fi 802.11b type connectivity from TelSouth. The problem was where to put the cameras. I talked to some people that owned or rented offices around 278, but all of the locations were not very good.
That idea didn't quite work out, but Beaufort County and the SC DOT started installing the traffic management system on highway 170. At that time the only part that was working was the stretch from Sun City to Beaufort. Without wasting any time I purchased the domain name hiltonheadtraffic.com and was just waiting for the 278 part of the project to be completed. I remember the excitement when the poles for the cameras went up. Then for a long time, just cables were hanging from the top of the poles. Then at last, the cameras were installed. I still remember driving to work every day and seeing SC DOT cars on the median of 278. One day finally the cameras were made live on the Beaufort County web site!
I tried to put a lot of revelant information on the website as well. Let me know if you have any suggestions or ideas. The website will always be a work in progress, and I would love to hear from you!
I want to say special thanks to my son Jarrett who helped me with the project. When not playing on the computer he can be quite a helper!
Also to give credit where credit is due, all of the live image information comes from the Beaufort County web site. I hope they will always provide those live images as a public service, supported by our tax dollars.
